What is Project Shield?

CES 2013: NVIDIA announces ‘Project Shield’ to the world – a unique handheld gaming device developed on the Android platform.

Incorporating the world’s fastest mobile processor – the new ‘NVIDIA Tegra 4′ this chip allows the hand-held console to deliver massive amounts of power from its custom 72-core GeForce GPU (the first quad-core application of ARM’s most advanced CPU core, the Cortex-A15). With a chip this powerful it really will be able to handle some impressively spec’d games and with its ‘battery-saver core and energy-saving PRISM 2 technology’ this thing should keep you occupied for hours!

Project Shield has the ability to directly download Android games from the NVIDIA’s very own TegraZone™ game store – in addition and one which really sets this device apart is its ability to act as a wireless games receiver from a nearby PC equipped with an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 650 GPU or higher. In addition to its gaming credentials Project Shield can also access various Android apps including the likes of Netflix and Hulu.

Screen-wise we are looking at an integrated 5-inch, 1280×720 HD retinal multi-touch display, with 294 dpi with a Micro HDMI out allowing you to pair this off with your 50″ HD TV. The integrated controller will offer you that familiar gaming experience something I always think is lost on touch-screen games. In addition to the Micro HDMI you are also presented with Micro USB and a microSD card slot.
