Limmex Classic 01 The watch that saves lives – wins M2M Challenge

Swiss watches are world-famous, and now Limmex has developed an elegant and potentially lifesaving timepiece the Classic 01 which is the first mobile phone based emergency watch and has been named ‘Innovator of the Year’ at the M2M Challenge 2013.

The Limmex Classic 01 is a mobile phone based emergency watch which discreetly contains a built-in loudspeaker and microphone and allows the wearer to call for help at the push of a button. Limmex, based in Switzerland, and Deutsche Telekom created a simple M2M solution that could save countless lives.

The M2M (Machine to Machine) Challenge recognises innovative apps within the categories of energy & smart grid, automotive & transport, security & surveillance, healthcare & wellness, and consumer electronics & more. Jurors, an international panel of technology experts, were convinced by the watch’s usability, design and potential for mass consumption.

In an emergency, a Limmex watch owner simply presses a button. If he has triggered a false alarm, he has 15 seconds to cancel the emergency call. Otherwise the watch dials a pre-set telephone number automatically. If nobody answers the call, it is redirected automatically to the next number on the wearer’s emergency numbers list. Up to ten numbers can be programmed. For German users, there is also a direct link to the German Red Cross’ emergency switchboard, which is manned 24/7.

The watch can even be set to trigger a return call within the 30 minutes. If the recipient responds, a voice connection is established. The watch is fitted with a microphone and a miniature loudspeaker. A Deutsche Telekom SIM chip provides the cellphone connection. These cards are smaller and more robust than conventional alternatives and are designed for a longer service life. Limmex manages the cards via an M2M (machine-to-machine) service portal.
